Iowa Learner's Permit Checklist
Before you begin driving in Iowa it is recommended, and in some cases required, that you get a learner's permit. A learner's permit will allow you to practice driving before you test for your full drivers license. Select from the options below to get started.
1: Download and study your practice test
2: Prove that you completed Iowa approved or comparable driver education course.
3: Via a local MVD office
Prepare youself by reading the Iowa Drivers Manual, and familiarize yourself with the rules and regulations of the road. In Iowa, there are two types of learner's permits available:
- Instruction Permit: You may apply for an instruction permit at age 14. It allows you to practice driving with your parent or guardian, a family member over 21, or a drivers education course teacher.
- Intermediate License: You may apply for an intermediate license at age 16. It allows you to drive during designated hours without supervision if you have completed the necessary classroom education and driver training requirements.
To apply for any permit, you will need to bring the following:
- Proof of your identity
- Verification of your Social Security number
- Parent's Written Consent
A compete list of the documents you will need can be found here:http://www.iowadot.gov/index.html#/services.
Note: If you've kept a clean driving record for at least 12 consecutive months, you can apply for a full drivers license at age 17.
