Selling a Car

When selling a car, review all state and federal requirements to avoid any problems between you and the potential buyer. In the state of Iowa, you are required to remove the vehicle license plates, provide an Odometer Statement and Damage Disclosure Statement and assign the car title to the buyer. If you sell your vehicle to an out-of-state buyer, send a title certificate properly assigned to the buyer and turn in your registration receipt to your county treasurer. If you sell your automobile for junk, give the buyer the certificate of title. Get a receipt stating the buyer has accepted delivery of car and title. Remember you can make a claim for refund of unused registration fees if a vehicle is sold or junked and credit is not claimed for a replacement vehicle or if the excess credit for your sold, junked or traded vehicle is $10 or more.
